About Dry Eye

While many patients have occasional dry eye symptoms, for some patients chronic dry eye can be a sign of meibomian gland dysfunction. Meibomian gland dysfunction, or MGD, is a medical condition in which the glands that produce oil as part of your tear film are blocked. Without this oily layer, your tears evaporate more rapidly. This causes the eyes to feel dry and poorly lubricated.

Some common symptoms of dry eye include:

  • redness

  • sandy or gritty sensation

  • excessive tearing

  • blurry vision

  • eye pain

  • sticky discharge

  • itching or burning sensation

  • crusty eyelashes

If you are experiencing these symptoms or have been previously diagnosed with MGD, Envision may be an option for you. Read on for additional information!

Forma-I

A cutting edge treatment for dry eye, Forma-I is a non-invasive office based treatment that uses a bipolar radio frequency applicator to heat the eyelids. This melts the secretions in the oil glands that form the surface of the tear film. This oil keeps the tears from evaporation and smooths the surface of they eyes for clearer vision. When the oil has been melted, the provider applies gentle pressure to the glands to remove old, solidified oils and unblock the new, more liquid secretions. This results in better lubrication of the eye and comfort. The treatment takes about thirty minutes and there is no down time. The heat will also stimulate collagen and elastin to reduce fine lines and wrinkles. Forma-I can be used on all skin types.

Lumecca-I

Lumecca-I is an intense pulsed light treatment FDA cleared to treat pigment and vascularity. This device has been specially designed with a small spot size perfect for treating the skin around the eyes. It treats inflammation and redness around the eyelids and also helps to improve oil viscosity in the meibomian glands. This causes the tears to coat the surface of the eyes better, reducing dryness and improving vision. This can be very helpful for patients who wear contact lenses.

The treatment is non-invasive and takes about ten minutes to perform, requiring no anesthesia. The provider applies gentle pressure to the oil glands after treatment to express the solidified oil. Three or four treatments scheduled two weeks apart will provide the best results. There is no down time, but treatment is limited to those with lighter complexions.
